Gutter Installation & Repair in Nutley, NJ

Rain, Trees and the Third River: What Gutters Can and Can’t Do

Nutley is threaded by the Third River, which runs through Yanticaw Park and the township’s other riverside parks before joining the Passaic River just over the line in Clifton. When the remnants of Ida hit on September 1 and 2, 2021, the National Weather Service forecast 3 to 6 inches of rain and Nutley’s emergency management office reported major flooding in the township.

It is worth being honest about this: gutters do not stop river or street flooding. If water is coming over the curb or up from a swollen river, that is a drainage and floodplain problem, not a gutter problem. What gutters do is control the water that falls on your roof, which on an average house is a large volume in a heavy storm. Without working gutters and leaders, that water lands right at the foundation, splashes up on siding and soaks into older basements.

Trees are the daily problem

Many Nutley streets and the blocks around the county parks have mature trees that drop leaves, seeds and twigs most of the year. Clogged gutters overflow at the corners, rot the fascia board behind them and send water down the wall instead of through the leader.

Seamless Aluminum Gutters Sized for Nutley Houses

Most of the gutters we install in Nutley are seamless aluminum, formed on site from a coil so each run is one continuous piece with no joints to leak except at the corners and outlets.

5-inch or 6-inch?

Five-inch K-style gutters are standard on many houses, but they are often too small for steep roofs, long runs or roofs with a valley dumping into one spot. On larger two-family houses and anywhere a valley concentrates water, we usually recommend 6-inch gutters with 3×4-inch leaders, which carry noticeably more water and clog less.

Leaders and placement

Leader placement matters as much as gutter size. We add leaders where runs are long, avoid draining upper roofs onto lower roofs where we can, and extend leaders so water discharges away from the foundation and walkways.

See our gutter installation service for more on materials and profiles.

Copper and half-round

On some of Nutley’s older and historic houses, half-round gutters with round leaders suit the architecture better than K-style. We install them in aluminum or copper. If you choose copper, keep it away from aluminum and steel components, since contact between different metals causes corrosion.

Gutter Guards, Cleaning and Repair

Guards

Under heavy tree cover, gutter guards can cut down on clogs and ladder work. No guard is maintenance-free: fine debris and seed pods still need occasional clearing, and the wrong guard on a low-slope roof can shed water over the edge. We match the guard to the tree type and roof pitch rather than selling one product for every house. Our gutter cleaning and gutter guard page compares the options.

Cleaning

For most tree-covered Nutley lots we suggest cleaning at least twice a year, once after the leaves are down in late fall and again in spring after seeds and blossoms drop. While we clean, we flush the leaders and check for loose hangers and leaking seams.

Repairs

Common repairs include resealing leaking corners and end caps, re-pitching sagging runs, replacing bent sections and rehanging gutters with hidden hangers. If the fascia board behind the gutter has rotted, we replace it before rehanging, because new gutters on soft wood will pull loose. See gutter repair for details.

Leaders, Discharge and the Rules in Nutley

New Jersey’s construction code lists repair, replacement or installation of exterior gutters and leaders as ordinary maintenance on any building, so gutter work in Nutley does not need a construction permit, whether the house is a single-family, a two-family or a small apartment building.
