Gutter Installation & Repair in Montclair, NJ

Water on a Hillside Town

Montclair sits on the east side of the First Watchung Mountain, and its rain drains downhill through a set of brooks in the Passaic River watershed: Toney’s Brook, Nishuane Brook, Wigwam Brook, Pearl Brook and Yantacaw Brook, along with the Second and Third Rivers. On a slope, water that leaves one roof does not stay on that lot.

The township has been dealing with this directly. In 2022 the Township Council took up an amendment to its stormwater rules after residents reported flooding on Burnside Street, along Yantacaw Brook and on South Park Street. As reported at the time, it would make it a code violation to artificially redirect or increase the flow of stormwater onto adjacent property, with fines of up to $2,000.

For a homeowner, the takeaway is simple: where your leaders discharge matters. A leader aimed at the property line, or a driveway that funnels roof water next door, can become a dispute with a neighbor. Gutters will not stop brook or street flooding, and we will not pretend they do, but a well-planned system keeps your own roof water on your own property and away from your foundation.

Sizing Gutters for Big Montclair Roofs

About one in five Montclair homes has five or more bedrooms (Census-based NeighborhoodScout figures), and many of those houses have tall, steep roofs with long runs and valleys that concentrate water at one corner.

Seamless aluminum, usually 6-inch

We form seamless aluminum gutters on site, so each run is one piece with joints only at corners and outlets. On large or steep roofs we generally recommend 6-inch gutters with 3×4-inch leaders over standard 5-inch. They carry noticeably more water and are less likely to clog under heavy leaf fall. See gutter installation for profiles and colors.

Copper and half-round

Half-round gutters with round leaders often suit Montclair’s older houses better than K-style. We install them in aluminum or copper. Montclair’s residential design guidelines point out an important detail: gutter materials should be chosen to avoid corrosion from incompatible metals, such as aluminum or steel in contact with copper. If you go copper, hangers, leaders and flashing need to be compatible.

Built-in gutters

Some older houses have gutters built into the cornice or roof edge. When those linings fail, water goes into the wall. We assess them during the inspection and will tell you honestly whether a hung gutter system, a repair or a specialist is the right answer.

Leaves, Guards, Cleaning and Repairs

Montclair’s mature street trees, parks such as Brookdale, Anderson and Yantacaw Brook Park, and large wooded lots mean leaves in the gutters for much of the fall and seeds and blossoms in spring.

Gutter guards

Guards cut down on clogs and ladder work, but none is maintenance-free, and some types do not suit steep or very low-slope roofs. We match the guard to the trees around your house and the pitch of the roof. Our gutter cleaning and gutter guard page compares the options.

Cleaning

Under heavy tree cover, plan on at least two cleanings a year, after leaf drop in late fall and again in spring. We flush leaders, check hangers and look at the fascia while we are up there.

Repairs

Leaking corners and end caps, sagging runs that hold water, crushed leaders and gutters pulling away from rotted fascia are the repairs we see most. If the fascia is soft, we replace it before rehanging the gutter. See gutter repair.

Gutter Rules for Montclair Properties

New Jersey’s construction code lists repair, replacement or installation of exterior gutters and leaders as ordinary maintenance for any building, so no construction permit is needed for gutter work in Montclair, from a single-family house to an apartment building.
