Siding Installation & Repair in Nutley, NJ

What Is on Nutley’s Walls Right Now

Nutley’s housing is old: about 63% of the township’s 12,253 homes were built before 1960, according to the Census Bureau’s 2020-2024 survey. A house that age has usually been re-sided at least once, and the layers tell its history. On homes of this era across North Jersey we commonly find:

• Original wood clapboard or wood shingle, sometimes still under a later layer, often with paint failure and rot at the bottom courses and window sills.
• Cement-board shingles applied in the middle of the 20th century. Many products from that period contained asbestos. They are stable when left alone, but they should be tested before anyone cuts, drills or removes them, and removal has to be handled by properly licensed contractors.
• Aluminum siding from the postwar decades, which dents, chalks and fades but rarely rots.
• Early vinyl that has gone brittle, warped near grills and dryer vents, or faded unevenly on the sunny side.

Before we price a job we find out what is on the house, what is underneath it and what condition the sheathing is in, because that decides whether the old siding can stay as a substrate or has to come off.

Siding Options We Install in Nutley

Vinyl

The most common choice for Nutley’s single-family and two-family houses. Modern vinyl is thicker and more color-stable than the early product, needs no painting, and is the most budget-friendly option. Our vinyl siding page covers profiles and colors.

Fiber cement

Heavier, non-combustible and closer to the look of painted wood. A good fit for prewar homes where the owner wants to keep a traditional clapboard or shingle appearance, and for houses close to their neighbors where fire resistance is a plus.

Engineered wood

Real wood fiber look with factory finishes, lighter than fiber cement and easier to detail around older trim.

Aluminum

Still the right answer for matching or patching an existing aluminum-sided house, and for trim coil around windows and fascia.

What goes behind the siding

Whatever you choose, the weather-resistive barrier, flashing at windows and doors, and proper kick-out flashing where a roof edge meets a wall matter as much as the siding itself. On older houses we look closely at the bottom of walls and around porch roofs, where water has usually been getting in for years.

Siding Rules in Nutley

New Jersey’s construction code treats repair or replacement of existing siding on one- and two-family dwellings as ordinary maintenance, so re-siding most Nutley houses does not need a construction permit. Unlike the roofing exemption, this one is not limited to detached houses, so it applies to attached one- and two-family homes too. Polypropylene siding is the exception and is not covered.

Soffit, Fascia and Repair Work

On many Nutley houses the first thing to rot is not the siding but the wood fascia behind the gutters and the soffit under the eaves. Overflowing gutters soak the fascia board, squirrels and birds find the soft spots, and the problem spreads into the rafter tails.

We replace rotted fascia boards, wrap them in aluminum trim coil, and install vented soffit panels that also give the attic the intake air a roof needs. Our soffit and fascia repair page explains the work in more detail.

Not every siding problem needs a whole house. Storm-damaged panels, a section cracked by a ladder or a wall damaged by a fallen limb can usually be repaired. Matching faded vinyl exactly is not always possible, so we will show you options before cutting anything. See siding repair for how we handle partial jobs.
