How do I know if my attic is poorly ventilated?

Common signs are an attic that feels very hot in summer, frost or damp sheathing in winter, ice dams along the eaves, rusty nails poking through the roof deck, and shingles that curl or blister years before they should.

Can you have too much attic ventilation?

Yes, if it is unbalanced. Mixing ridge vents with gable vents or powered fans can short-circuit the airflow, and exhaust without enough soffit intake can pull conditioned air out of the house. The goal is balanced intake at the eaves and exhaust at the ridge.

Should ventilation be upgraded during a roof replacement?

It is the best time to do it. With the old shingles off, we can cut a continuous ridge vent, add or clear soffit intake and size the system to the attic before the new roof goes on.
