Siding Installation & Repair in Lodi, NJ

What’s on Lodi Houses Today

Lodi’s housing is old and practical. The American Community Survey (2020–2024) shows more than half of the borough’s units were built before 1960, and about 40 percent are in two-unit buildings. Walk the side streets and you will see the siding history of the last hundred years layered onto those houses.

Aluminum siding

Aluminum went onto many postwar and older Lodi houses in the 1960s and 1970s. It does not rot, but it dents, chalks and fades, and loose pieces rattle in wind. Painting it buys time; replacing it fixes the dents for good.

Older shingle siding on pre-war houses

Houses from the 1920s through the 1950s were often covered with mineral-fiber shingles, some of which contain asbestos-cement. They are durable when left alone. If we suspect that material, we stop and recommend testing before anything is cut or removed, and we discuss covering it in place versus removal so you can decide with full information.

Wood clapboard and early vinyl

Some houses still have original wood under later siding. Early vinyl from the 1980s and 1990s is often brittle now, cracked near the ground from lawn equipment and buckled where it was nailed too tight.

Siding Options for Lodi Homes

Vinyl

Vinyl is the most common choice on Lodi two-families. It needs no painting, comes in insulated versions, and is easy to repair panel by panel. Our vinyl siding page covers profiles and colors.

Fiber cement

Fiber cement holds paint well, resists fire and impact, and looks like painted wood. It is heavier and takes more labor, which suits owners planning to keep a house long term.

Engineered wood

Engineered wood gives a real wood look with factory finishes and lighter weight than fiber cement, a good fit for front elevations where curb appeal matters.

Aluminum

For owners who want to match existing aluminum on part of a house, or prefer metal, we still install and repair aluminum siding.

Mixing materials on two-families

Many owners use fiber cement or engineered wood on the street-facing front and vinyl on the sides and rear, where neighbors’ houses are a few feet away. It controls cost while improving the face of the building.

Soffit, Fascia and Trim

On older Lodi houses the roof edge usually fails before the walls do. Wood fascia behind gutters rots where water overflows, and open or damaged soffits let in squirrels, birds and bees. When we side a house we wrap fascia in aluminum and install vented soffit, which also helps attic ventilation if the roof is being replaced. Our soffit and fascia repair page shows what that work includes.

Trim around windows and doors matters as much as the panels. Proper J-channel, flashing at window heads and sealed penetrations for meters, hose bibs and vents keep water from getting behind new siding.

Siding Rules in Lodi

Under New Jersey’s construction code (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7), repairing or replacing existing siding on a one- or two-family house is ordinary maintenance and does not need a construction permit. Unlike the roofing rule, it does not require the house to be detached, so attached homes in that category are covered too. One exception: polypropylene siding is not included in that exemption.
