Gutter Installation & Repair in Elmwood Park, NJ

Gutters, the Passaic and Honest Expectations

Elmwood Park’s western edge is the Passaic River, and the National Weather Service gauge at the Dundee Dam lists River Drive as the first road to go under when the river hits minor flood stage. Borough flood-insurance claims rise sharply in storm years like Floyd (1999), Irene (2011) and Ida (2021). Fleischer Brook is also mapped as a flood source in the borough.

We want to be straightforward: no gutter system protects a house from a river or brook coming over its banks. That is a matter for flood insurance, elevation and the borough’s floodplain rules. What gutters do is handle the rain that falls on your own roof, and keep it from soaking the ground right next to your foundation. On a house where the soil is already wet from a long storm, that is a real difference between a dry basement and a damp one.

How much water are we talking about?

An inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof is roughly 620 gallons. A typical Elmwood Park Cape or ranch sheds that in a single heavy storm, and all of it lands within a few feet of the foundation unless gutters and downspouts carry it away.

Seamless Gutter Installation

We roll seamless aluminum gutters on site to the length of each run, so there are no seams along the straight sections to leak. Details are on our gutter installation page.

Sizing for Elmwood Park roofs

Five-inch K-style gutters handle many ranches and smaller Capes. Two-story houses, two-families and roofs where several planes drain to one corner often need 6-inch gutters and larger 3×4 downspouts. We size each run by the roof area feeding it and add downspouts where water would otherwise pile up.

Solid attachment

Hidden hangers screwed into sound fascia at close spacing hold gutters under the weight of ice and wet leaves. Where the fascia board behind an old gutter has rotted, we replace or wrap it first.

Copper and half-round

On brick-front houses or homes with a traditional look, half-round gutters in copper or aluminum are an option that ages well and complements masonry.

Leaves, Guards and Upkeep

Elmwood Park’s residential streets have plenty of mature shade trees, and Artesian Fields County Park adds more green space in town. Street and yard trees fill gutters with leaves, seeds and twigs every spring and fall.

Gutter guards

Mesh guards block most leaves while letting water through. They make a big difference on houses under trees, though fine debris and seeds still call for occasional rinsing.

Cleaning schedule

Plan on at least two cleanings a year, after the leaves fall and again in spring, and more under heavy tree cover. Our gutter cleaning service includes flushing the downspouts, which is where clogs hide.

Repairs

Leaky corners, sagging sections, loose hangers and crushed downspouts can usually be repaired without a full replacement. See gutter repair for details.

Downspouts, Drainage and the Rules

Where the downspout ends matters as much as the gutter itself. We aim to discharge water several feet from the foundation, onto ground that slopes away from the house, using extensions or splash blocks. On driveways and walks we avoid outlets that would create an ice patch in winter.
